May 20th 1992 @ Silver Cloud Studios

On Wednesday, May 20th 1992 at Sliver Cloud Studios in Burbank, California Social Justice recorded and mixed the I Refuse To Lose 7″ E.P. under the production of Roy Z and the engineering skills of Joe Floyd and Sean Kenisie. This formula would prove positive and was carried over into the downset. writing and recording process. We put our money together collectively as a band for the recording and for the pressing at Rainbo Records in Santa Monica as well. This E.P. was released weeks later in June of 1992 as Justice Records 001 limited to a press of 500. The line-up was X-Ray Oropeza – Messenger, Chris Lee – Drums, James Morris – Bass, Roy Lozano – rythm guitar, and Don Ward – lead guitar. The E.P. was later re-released on Green Records in Germany in late 1993 and has been followed up by several unauthorized releases by Lost and Found Records in the years after. This release was advertised and reviewed in Maximum Rock & Roll #114 & #128 and a local San Fernando Valley publication called The Noise.

April 11th 1992 @ Cell 63

Saturday, April 11, 1992. A little spot called Cell 63 that was literally a basement of a house in Granada Hills, California, tucked up against the 118 freeway. Social Justice played this show with Bottom Line (which also had Chris from SJ on drums & Dan Palmer from Death By Stereo on bass), Strife, Outright and Still Life. This is where most of the live pictures were taken for the “I Refuse To Lose” 7″ EP which would be recorded weeks later on May 20th, including the cover shot seen above. Anyone from the 818, 661 or 805 hardcore scenes will probably see some familiar faces!

Andrew from Bottom Line recently brought an old VHS tape back to life in the digital age and was kind enough to post the sets of Social Justice, Bottom Line and Strife on YouTube! Score!

Blast From The Past Show in 1988!

Social Justice 9-24-1988On September 24th, 1988 Social Justice played a backyard party on Kagel Canyon Blvd in Arleta Ca. with Positive Approach, I.D.K. and Misguided, all of which were San Fernando Valley based bands. Hardcore was huge in the 818 at the time and Social Justice was no exception. Hailing from Sylmar they became the hometown heroes of hardcore. Parties at places like The Ranch and at Mike Meyhem’s backyard ramp in Sylmar and at various houses in San Fernando, Pacoima and more were going down almost every weekend with many local acts performing. Here is a flyer from the 1988 show in Arleta! 23 years ago! Yep, we’re getting old! HA! “Young Till I Die”

The Last Show @ Spanky’s in Riverside 1992

Social Justice @ Spankys 1992On Saturday, November 28th, 1992 at Spanky’s (now defunct) in Riverside, Ca. Social Justice played its last show. Sharing the stage for the night were Mean Season, Beg To Differ, Focused, None For All, Dead Serious and Haters Alley. Wish One from MYL rocked the flyer with a graff style b-boy in the vein of the original artwok done by Genius from DTK way back in 1988. I remember vividly rolling out in Roy’s black truck blasting Down By Law on the 60 fwy! This final shows lineup included Ray Oropeza on vocals, James Morris on bass, Chris Lee on drums and Roy Lozano & Ricky Reyes on guitars. If you were there it was a spectacular show full of energy! Day’s later the band “Concrete” was formed as this was the original moniker of downset. You know the rest; if not read about it on downset.net!

OG’s… 20 years later! North Hollywood 2011

Since May of this year James Morris, Roy Lozano and Chris Lee have been jamming at various studios and rehearsal locations in the great one eight. It’s been over 20 years since they were doing their thing in Social Justice and a couple years later in downset. The jams have been very fun and productive and have produced over 8 hours of song ideas. We decided to go forward with it and see what it can produce. Roy is coining it “L.A. Anger”, but I’m sure the name will change as the music develops. All i can say about it at this point is Post-hardcore with some 80′s influence and some downsetesque stuff!! Sorry for the crappy picture, but phones are just that, phones and we wanted to make sure we captured the moment! lol. Good stuff! We’ll keep you posted of the progress in an upcoming blog post!)-KR
